FAQ
Questions, answered.
Everything general contractors ask before moving their COI tracking off the spreadsheet.
Still have a question? info@coi-shield.com
What is a certificate of insurance (COI)?+
A COI — usually the one-page ACORD 25 form — is the proof a subcontractor carries the insurance they claim: general liability, auto, workers comp, umbrella. General contractors collect one from every sub, because if an uninsured sub causes a loss on your site, the claim can land on you. COI Shield keeps every certificate current so that never happens quietly.
How does the AI reading work?+
Upload a certificate as a PDF or photo and the AI extracts the carrier, policy numbers, coverage limits, and effective and expiration dates, then compares each line against the requirements you set. The whole pass takes about 30 seconds. Anything unreadable or below your limits is flagged for a human look instead of silently accepted.
Do my subcontractors need accounts?+
No. Each subcontractor gets a personal upload link. They open it, drop in their certificate, and they are done — no signup, no password, nothing to remember. The certificate lands in your dashboard already parsed and checked.
What happens after the 7-day trial?+
You pick a plan to keep going. We never collect a card up front, so there is no surprise charge — if you do nothing, the account simply pauses and your data stays put until you decide. Upgrading takes about a minute.
Can I change plans later?+
Yes. You can upgrade, downgrade, or switch between monthly and annual billing at any time. Changes are prorated automatically, and your subcontractor data carries over untouched.
Is my data secure?+
Your data lives in a Postgres database with row-level security, so each company can only ever see its own records. Certificates are stored in private storage buckets, traffic is encrypted in transit, and we never sell or share your data. Payments are handled by Creem, our merchant of record — card numbers never touch our servers.
